Ace of Pentacles/Coins Across Decks

August 27, 2014

I saw in my statistics page that someone had come to my site searching for images of the Ace of Coins. I thought to myself that this might make an excellent study.

Danger, danger, hours later after searching through dozens of decks and scanning, adjusting, rotating and labelling in Photoshop, I’m a bit punchy. When you’re in a funk, nothing helps like a bit of sorting, categorization, and organization. This was more than a bit, but hey it made for a keenly interesting day.

Dealing mostly with the Rider-Waite model (here used in the Universal Waite deck) I decided that there were three kinds of imagery with this card: the classic “hand of God” approach; the figurative approach related to the theme like in the Golden Tarot; and the pattern and shape decorated or changed similar to a pip in transformation playing cards, like in this marvelous Ace of Pentacles in the Sun and Moon.

In this study I am ignoring the figurative approach, and looking more at the other two.

THREE MODELS

Ace1

THE HAND OF GOD APPROACH

Ace2

I don’t see too many people using the Fradella deck but it’s one of my favourites.

PAGAN PENTACLES AND GROWING THINGS

Ace3

COINS OF THE REALM

Ace4

PLANET EARTH

Ace5

BUDDHA AND THE THIRD EYE

Ace6

ANCIENT STANDING STONES

Ace7

PATTERNS AND SHAPES

Ace8

Ace9

SO UNIQUE THEY CAN’T BE CATEGORIZED

Ace10

I’ve talked about that Universal Fantasy card before, it reminds me so much of an old brooch.

So that’s it, about 8 hours of work and 39 decks!

Cernunnos Across Decks

June 16, 2013

Someone I met online was experiencing an epiphany about Cernunnos, and I started this study thinking I had many images of Cernunnos the Celtic horned God in my deck collection, but I only found four. I know there is one in the Druidcraft Tarot but I don’t own that.

If anyone passes by who knows or owns other decks that contain images of Cernunnos, do post about it in the comments section, thanks.

It’s interesting that in some images he is depicted much like existing statuary of the God with a rounded cap and antlers, and in others he is depicted as a sexy guy with long hair and antlers growing straight out of his head. He is often associated with the Devil, which was an attempt by Christianity to demonize an older, pagan deity. I find it disturbing to have cultural symbolism erased or white-washed like that.

In any case he’s rather dangerous like many Gods, but not unapproachable I would think.

Each Night they Tend Each Other’s Wounds

September 3, 2011

Daily Draw September 3rd, 2011

5 COMBAT OF BATTLE

Also known as the 5 of Swords, this is usually about conflict. Here the two fight, evenly matched, and then tend each other’s wounds, and start fighting again the next day.

While I am not fighting with anyone, I have to be careful today for stress overload. After my big insight on shopping yesterday my stove had an electrical problem and caught fire. So today I have to shop for a new stove. It is 27 years-old and had to be replaced some time, but of course it happened before the long weekend when we wanted to relax.

I am not good with shopping or stress, but apparently our regular appliance shop will deliver the stove today for us so at least we’ll be able to cook later.

My toaster went on fire the day before this. It had been acting funny and we now have a new one. We are reaching critical mass this year for home problems and do actually feel like we tend our wounds regularly. Last night we sat reading mysteries in the living room, and when we finished our books, we swapped them and continued reading.

Reading makes us feel calmer. Sometimes that’s all you can do.

And tend your wounds.

The Shaper Waves to Kenny

August 26, 2011

Daily Draw August 26th, 2011

There is something about the light in August, changing, and the crickets and cicadas humming that always brings a little sadness. Autumn is coming and the year moves on to inevitable winter. My husband has three days left of holidays, so that’s a bit sad too.

III – THE SHAPER

A bit of a different take on The Empress. A mother figure maintaining a loving watch over all life. This lady knows about seasons and common sense. I feel a sense of nurturing today and the harvest of vegetables, fruit, and grains.

I have had this song going through my mind for two days. I don’t recall hearing it recently, so the little man in my brain might have pulled it from the archives for some reason. It’s called Don’t Look Back by Kenny MacLean, whom I remember best from his tenure in the band Platinum Blond. I am channelling the 80s folks, complete with men and mullet hairdos. When I looked this up I was sad to see that Kenny had died of heart-related problems in 2008. He was the same age as I, so a reminder to look after my heart.

The Shaper says to give the body whole grains, fruit and berries and things will be okay. I overloaded on vitamins yesterday, which is a sign to ratchet the dosage down, so I have today. The Shaper…I like that she fades out in this, as if she is always in the background monitoring things, protecting and sustaining me, although I don’t see her.

She says not to be sad, don’t look back to the beginning of summer and promise, but look ahead to the continuing harvest.

Brighid Takes Her Vitamins

August 25, 2011

Daily Draw August 25th, 2011

I feel like a miner, mining for older decks within my bookshelf. I like this deck but it’s a bugger to get out of the packaging. Normally I would discard the original packaging after making a tuckbox from the original box, but I never did for this one.

I love the large cards in this and the saturated colours and primitive look to some of the artwork. The illustrator was Olivia Rayner, who not surprisingly is an excellent children’s book illustrator.

QUEEN OF ART (Queen of Cups)

On this card she is Brighid sitting beside the eternal flame of creativity. She nourishes, heals and instructs. In her hand are sixteen vitamin C pills that she is taking spaced throughout the day, so that she gets 16 g of that vitamin into her body for healing.

Oh wait, maybe that’s me?

That Brighid, she’s such a kidder.
