The King of Swords and Two Ladies

June 12, 2017

The King of Swords, that virile fellow, has been dating two women and is indicating a preference for the younger Page of Coins from the Ancient Minchiate Etruria rather than the Japanese lady on the 7 of Hearts from the Ukiyo-e Playing Cards.

Given his penchant for intellectual world-building and vision, I’m not sure this earthy Coins Page is a suitable match, but he has been mesmerized by her practical ability with finances. Unfortunately after he becomes used to her hair streaming in the wind while she delicately skips about in her fine sandals, he will begin to notice her lingering stubbornness when he wants to hire an architect to build a new palace. She will say to him “Look at this Coin, do you really need a new palace, isn’t it enough to disport through the kingdom in a handsome bear cloak with me by your side as Queen in new dresses woven with gold?”

“Well no”, he will remark after indicating the new style of architecture from Milan, and even her youthful bosom will not sway him from his will to build, to throw his mental power into a new project. At that point he will dream about his more demur and compliant mistress with the dark hair and imagine her letting her hair down and brushing it over his forearm while he shows her the new architectural plans and sketches for statuary, including the Venus he wants her to pose for.

He will call for her to come to him in rustling silks and gold, and she will sing songs of world-building ventures as he closes his eyes and smells jasmine.

You can’t be too careful in choosing the right partner if you are a King. Differing enthusiasms about world-building can strangle you like a long, draped scarf.

Is That a Mountain or a Crown on Your Head?

December 10, 2012

Daily Draw December 10th, 2012

This is my favourite Uncle’s birthday today. He has been dead for almost 4 years but I still miss him and think about him.

What’s with all these Pages? They keep coming up, and here is the Page of Coins again. Is that a mountain on her mind, or merely a mountain of books she has to get through over the Winter? The flowers behind her remind me of irises and I love irises. Celtic knots of learning, mountains of reading material, and irises to look forward to.

She’s locked up though, contemplating all those books. A wee bit uptight or nervous. Embrace the learning kid! Contemplate the Beginner’s Mind.

I like the idea of fresh enthusiasm and unlocking.

The Minutiae of Pointillist Pigs

March 10, 2011

Daily Draw March 10th, 2011

The robins are usually here by now, scampering about the garden, but we just got a fresh lot of snow. Rats.

This is from the PoMo Tarot by Brian Williams, another favourite of mine. This is the Page of Coins in conventional decks. Sunday in the park with Georges Sourat. I can still hear Bernadette Peters singing the song from the Broadway musical. It seems so long ago.

In today’s draw I think she is in her reversed role. A bit overwhelmed by her animals and veterinary costs, she is so uptight her stomach, shoulders and neck ache. The perpetual beginner is swamped with tiny little dots, the minutiae of her life, which can blend into lovely shades and tones or simply be too much to complete into a whole image. Dot, dot, dot, like a colourful Morse code, that is never finished into a message.

Nothing is fusing into a picture right now. Her feet are burning she’s been walking so long and her heels are killing her. She keeps tripping on that damn monkey and the pink pig just tears around, excreting wildly, ruining her new leather boots and causing her to cut off her skirts. The bustle of money interferes with her movement.

Rats. Or pigs maybe…

Joy and Return

November 15, 2010

Daily Draw November 15th, 2010

As a bird who sings its joy,
rejoice in the happiness that returns.

This is like saying “you get what you give.”

The Pages have the youth and resilience to do that before they get swamped in the bitterness that living often brings. I like Nigel’s words “dissipated talents” for the reverse of this card because it reminds me of the regret and bitterness of middle age.

So, studenthood and learning, these are properties of youth that we can still access at any age. Receiving and conserving the gold of spiritual wisdom that has been handed down to us is something Nigel speaks of here too.

There is a certain openness to youth that allows learning. I like the enthusiasm of learning new things. Enthusiasm is “a god within” and we are lucky to have it, lucky to be able to swing the mind around and learn and study and keep on going.
