Okanagan Oracle Colour Study 10: Unknown

ANIMAL MESSAGES – SCARAB BEETLE – What is unregarded or discarded holds a secret, a seed of creation.
FLOWER READINGS CARDS – QUEEN OF THE NIGHT – Power (Selenicereus grandifloras)
CREATURE TEACHER CARDS – OWL – I Always Tell the Truth

I am so happy to be doing one of these finally on the new computer.  I decided to limit myself to fewer cards in these studies from now on, as the last one I did had so many cards that it became tedious to manage.

This one has five cards total which is manageable and a little extra work due to sharpening and colour adjustment and having to make individual shadows instead of using Photoshop to copy the drop shadow into each layer in seconds. However I do find that with the cards turned I can more accurately move the shadow to reflect the light source. But then I have to group the shadow with its card so I can easily move it around.

I thought this was a mysterious group with keywords of power and truth and the unknown. The Scarab Beetle reminded me of my old computer which I despised and the seeds of creation on this one. The write-up for this also says it might mean unguessed-at-knowledge which ties in with what is unknown.

The High Priestess looks like the Virgin Mary with her blue robe and roses, the mystery of knowing and intuition. So perhaps we may feel we are stepping into the unknown but the psyche supports us? This really ties in for me with the Queen of the Night flower and secrets revealed and intuition. The shadow aspect of the self brings opportunities for growth; dreams, cycles and life transitions. The Latin name for this plant starts with a moon reference as Selene is the goddess of the moon, and on the High Priestess card are phases of the moon, held.

With the unknown comes a lack of confidence, I’ve been feeling that all year, but these cards seem to say that it’s only a feeling, the reality underneath is different, there are seeds in the dung.

Owls are most active at night, I’ve been out at night and heard them hooting, wishing I could connect and see one. I am hoping to draw and paint an owl this year using my photo reference book for owls. Don’t lie or pretend things didn’t happen, that’s a dark way even if you have good eyesight. Again, the real unknown versus what we perceive as unknown.

The interesting thing is that I chose these cards by colour without bothering with meaning but they fit together into a meditation.

Eagles Across Decks

I thought I had all my cards unboxed from our cross-country move but while searching for particular animal decks, I realized that some loose ones that I wrapped separately from their boxes were missing. Fortunately the spouse rounded them up for me. You would think with 394 decks I would forget but Judith never forgets a deck!

An overview with an attendant eagle figure, this one by Schleich.

And don’t forget those other four decks Jude. The eagle in the card with the yellow border has taken a fancy to my figure, he’s zooming toward him with some urgency. Figures inspire everyone I suppose.

The KING OF SWORDS  was the card I drew today from the Animal Totem Tarot that started the eagles flying. I had mentioned to someone recently how my deck collecting had gone down lately because I just want to buy art created by hand or at least created by hand in Adobe Illustrator. Upon taking these cards out my heart sang with the impact and beauty of the art and each artist’s expression and composition. It does not get better than this for me as a collector, this stuff makes me happy and inspires my own artwork.

The King, in his highly analytical way, enjoyed this comparison. In this card as you fly higher you strip away what isn’t important, your soaring height makes things clearer, shifts the focus, lets you drop nonessentials. Not a bad reflection of how I currently feel about card decks.

The Magical Menagerie was one deck I couldn’t find this morning so I knew I had another box somewhere. The Pathfinders deck holds up, it’s one of my favourites. Susan Seddon Boulet has been dead since 1997, but her Animal Spirits Knowledge Cards are still in print, and no wonder; what a legacy.

I think the Animal Messages deck is out of print now but I’m so glad I bought one when it was readily available, it’s a treasure, and Sue Lion’s Spirit Animals always looks so fresh and comes in a tin with a window so you can put your card of the day in view. The Animalis deck is also a fresh vision with lots of bones and unusual compositions.

More decks that hold up for me: the Tarot of Reincarnation is one you have to hunt for the species and some of the names have changed. I have a fuller discussion and small review of it here. It has nothing to do with reincarnation, unless you figure the original illustrations (long out of copyright) have been reincarnated.

I absolutely love both these bird decks, they are definitely treasures both for the art and the variety of images. I rarely use the Medicine Cards but they are neat in their own way. At the time they were published I don’t think there were many animal decks in existence, so it was important.

Ah, the satisfaction of a card comparison after a long break from my cards. It’s like coming out of a desert to drink a glass of ice water. Cool baby.

Happy Sunday!

Big Heads Bouncing with Flexible Strength

I was delighted after my draw yesterday with an e-mail and phone call about a huge secret. Someone in the family did in vitro fertilization and is now pregnant with a boy (perhaps Mr. Harum Scarum?) They’ve been keeping this a secret for about ten weeks until all the tests were done. So, as the card said “I only keep good secrets” and someone did.

RAVEN – I Believe In Magick

It won’t surprise anyone to hear that I don’t believe in magick. It may be there, but it’s never happened to me. Jesus has never zoomed down to perform miracles in my life either. Am I not worth it, do I not pray enough Big J?

Raven is a trickster with a haunting voice. His black colour reminds us of the mysterious, and the place of “Great Unknowing” where the powers and great Spirit of the Universe reside. He can fly back and forth between that and us humans, like a messenger. See yourself worthy of receiving: perhaps that’s it, my worthy transmitter broke.

For Strength, I think I might be getting a whiff of the reversed meaning in lack of direction and being overwhelmed. Yet mastery and control are part of this card; that cat stands his ground while the big dog licks him.

My cat often goes up to my Newfoundland dog to get a cuddle and she gets licked and licked while they both enjoy the company. The big dog could simply knock her over, but she never does. There’s a certain adaptability or flexibility to Strength that I haven’t considered before. It’s control, but it’s a flexible control, like bouncing back after a large dog licks your ear and your whole head bounces around.

Raven of course knows this from visiting the Great Unknowing.

The Belled Cat Keeps a Secret

Back to reality after being winked out of the universe by The Great Envelope Imperative.

KNIGHT OF CATS (Knight of Swords) – Russian Blue Cat
LYNX – I Only Keep Good Secrets

Two cats today, and one of them is Mr. Harum Scarum, my Russian Blue Knight of Swords. He often comes up for me, reminding me not to dash off and do things impetuously. There is something to be said for being quick-acting though. I find especially for creative projects that I often need to dash off and get things done because if I overthink things, I never get them down in concrete form. Despite having a bell around his neck, this Knight will still take action.

The illustration on the Lynx card was done by Sioux Dollman, who is mentioned in tiny print inside the book. A bad secret might be when someone says “Don’t tell” when they are being abusive to you, and a good secret might be keeping a confidence when someone tells you they are getting a job promotion.

Don’t go dashing off saying you will keep a secret when you won’t, is Mr. Harum Scarum’s advice. There are people who blab and gossip and you just can’t trust.

Cats are good at keeping secrets, talk to your trustworthy cat friends.

Animals, Children, and a Darn Good Likeness of a Sheep

Since the death of my cat Stitch superseded Database Monday, I’m doing Database Monday on Tuesday. Mondays can be stretched into Tuesday in the space/time continuum of Because I Can.

These are the Creature Teacher Cards by Scott Alexander King, published by Blue Angel and illustrated by Sioux Dollman. I bought them for the artwork on the 45 cards. I use it but the book is written for children as a way for them to deal with the real world and real world situations, and a way of working through it in a way that helps them talk about problems. So the writing is a bit odd for adults, a bit simplistic, but the cards are good.

For those of you waiting for the sheep.

As you can see, adults might have to deal with many of the same things or need similar affirmations so that’s why I keep this deck. I like relevant commentary no matter what.

I also like a good depiction of the Tawny Frogmouth. You can’t beat that as the impetus to buy a deck of cards.

The Pretence of Ducks Among Eggshell People

Daily Draw August 18th, 2012

You’re swimming along, calmly and all these bright flowers shoot up from the mud……….

I am taking a homeopathic remedy and journalling on the advice of my Naturopath. The first day I was quite happy and cheery. The second day I was crabby and tired, and the third day I am pissed off and writing like mad, sometimes in big, black letters. I might scream and hit a pillow later on. Oh dear, good girls do not get angry with their friends, they listen with sympathy, they dare not talk about themselves when a dear friend wants to interrupt and talk yet again about one of their cats.

Yeah, right, well thanks for listening my dear, dear friend. I’m bloody tired of walking on eggshells with assholes who don’t give a sh….well you can see why that Duck is swimming by just now. Some things are best kept in the private pages of journals, or better yet written down and then burnt.

I’m going to do that, write a bunch of stuff down, scream and hit the pillow, and then burn the writing. I’m going to release all this tension from my body and burn it off.

So there. I already feel guilty and bad. The Duck card talks about how sometimes it is necessary to hide your emotions. Pretending to be calm helps you glide effortlessly through life, and be balanced in your emotions. “Don’t become so detached that you accidentally shut people out, especially those willing to offer a supportive shoulder to cry on or a sympathetic ear.”

Obviously Duck hasn’t been swimming in the sphere of the cat lady and the other asshole sociopath who pretended to be my friend for 40 years, or the two bipolar people who ranted and shamed me and berated me constantly, or the online “pals” who pretended to be other people and shopped my e-mails around and lied and lied and lied and said they’d done nothing wrong, that I was the one with the problem, I was too attached to my expectations. I shall collectively call them The Eggshell People.

Every fibre in my body screams with chronic tension and pain. Duck is paddling like crazy under the water and needs to come to shore and truly rest, not just pretend to be calm. Pretence/pretense, tense, tension. Today’s revelation.

Bloody ducks pretending.

Wolf Power

Daily Draw August 16th, 2012

I know someone who would love this card. Unfortunately she doesn’t talk to me any more. I was talking to my naturopath about friendship and mentioned that I often had friends who threw things back in my face, or took personal information and threw it back if they got irritated with me. She said “That’s not a friend.” Quite so, perhaps I shall learn the lesson finally.

Wolves love their family and like to hunt and sleep together as a group, and raise wolf pups together as a group. Experience is relevant when you are a wolf, giving you more power and wisdom, which is an advantage over other packs of wolves. I suppose that could be said for any animal, but wolves in particular learn from their mistakes and then carry on without making the mistake the biggest thing that ever happened to them. Associate with the best influence, the group that cares about you.

This card is about learning easily and sharing your wisdom. Develop that by studying hard and listening, listening to the real truth of things.
